Restoring sql server 7.0 database into sql server 2005 express - problem!

Hi!

I'm a beginner w ith SQL Express and am having some problems. I am using 2005 SP1 and installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express as well. I have a backup from a SQL Server 7.0 database that I am trying to restore into my database using the management studio. When I try to restore from the file into my database, I get the error,

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of the system database on the device D:\GMBeta2Local.bak cannot be restored because it was created by a different version of the server (7.00.1063) than this server (9.00.3033). (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)

Is this true? Is there any way for me to get this data into my SQL Server 2005 express on my laptop?

hi,

thi message is usually raised when a system database is tried to be restored across different SQL Server versions, as reported in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264474/en-us..

you should only "upgrade" user's databases..

Restoring SQL Server 2000 backup to Express

When I try to restore my SQL Server 2000 backup file to a newly installed copy of SQL Server 2005 Express using Studio Express, I get the following error:

The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'UpperBridge' database. (Microsoft.sqlservfer.Express.smo)

The backup is made from an SQL Server 2000 database called 'UpperBridge'

I am trying to restore to a database called 'UpperBridge' which I created under 'New databases' in Studio Express.

Any help very much appreciated.

try forcing the "overwrite" of the database already present in the SQLExpress instance,
RESTORE DATABASE ....
....
WITH REPLACE;

or just drop the database before restoring (obviously take a full local backup of it before dropping it, if required )..

Restoring from 2000 backup to 2005 instance

I did a backup of a 2000 database using the 2005 management studio. I then
created a blank database on my 2005 instance. I then tried to do a database
restore to the new 2005 database. I got an error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup set holds a backup of a database
other than the existing 'Winstis' database. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
I even tried the option to Overwrite Existing database and I got a different
error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '32
(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another
process.)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCrea
tion' on
'D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\test.ldf'. (Microsoft.
SqlServer.Smo)
Also the 2005 instance database is on C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\
MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\Winstis_Data.mdf
and the 2000 instance is on
D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\Winstis_Data.mdf
How can I accomplish getting the database from 2000 to 2005?
Message posted via http://www.droptable.comHello,
Do not create the blank database instead do the below steps:-
1. Do the SQL Server 2000 backup using Backup Database WITH INIT
2. Copy the .BAK file to SQL 2005 machine
3. Create the required folders for MDF and LDF in SQL 2005 server
3. Do the below command
RESTORE DATABASE Winstis FROM DISK='D:\backup\dbbackup2000.bak'
with MOVE 'LogicalMDFName' to 'd:\Data\Winstis_Data.mdf',
with MOVE 'LogicalLDFName' to 'd:\Data\Winstis_log.ldf',stats=2
Ge the logical MDF and LDF names using RESTORE FILELISTONLY command
Thanks

Restoring from 2000 backup to 2005 instance

I did a backup of a SQL2000 database (named Winstis) using the 2005 management studio. I then created a blank database on my 2005 instance (named Winstis). I then tried to do a database restore to the new 2005 database. I got an error:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'Winstis' database. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

I even tried the option to Overwrite Existing database and I got a different error:

(Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

Also the 2005 instance database is on C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\Winstis_Data.mdf

and the 2000 instance is on
D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\Winstis_Data.mdf

How can I accomplish getting the database from 2000 to 2005 with all tables, store procedures, and functions?you can restore from a 2000 backup to a 2005 server, but only if the db you are restoring to doesn't exist on the 2005 server at restore time.

so delete the winstis db on your 2005 instance then restore from the bak, should work ok then.|||Hi Jezemine,
I actually tried it that way as well. I finally got an answer from another forum. The key was using the move options on the RESTORE.

Thanks though.

Restoring from .MDF/.LDF

Hi there,

I've got a .mdf/.ldf database/log. I'm trying to bring it into SQL Server Management studio, but can't figure out how. I've gotten as far as "Attaching" it, but can't figure out where to go from there. Can anyone help me out. I know this is very basic.

Thanks.

First of all, you cannot "Restore from MDF files"

Hi,

place the mdf /ldf file somewhere you want to keep them in the future. Then you will have to use the attach dialog you already found and attach the database files. If the logfile path points to another direction than it is currently stored in, change it and click ok. SQL Server will attach the database and open it for further use.

Restoring Database or Files/Filegroups

Hello:
In SQL 2005 Management Studio, what is the difference between restoring
"Database" and "Files or Filegroups"? When you right-click on a database and
you choose Tasks...Restore, you have a choice between "Database" and "Files
or Filegroups". What's the difference?
Choosing "Database" seems to work better, if I am restoring a backup of one
database into another database. But, I think if I'm restoring a backup of a
database into the same database, I usually choose "Files or Filegroups".
childofthe1980s
My understanding you want to use FileGroup/File backup if you need to do
separate backups on the files in the database.
Lets say you have three file groups:
FileGroupA - Primary HEAVY USAGE
FileGroupB - Read Only
FileGroupC - System Objects
So you can create a backup plan that backups FileGroupA on regular basis and
do a FULL backup once a week so as to speed up backup processes.
But if you have only one file group in databases (most ppl do), I don't
think you notice a difference.

Restoring Database or Files/Filegroups

Hello:
In SQL 2005 Management Studio, what is the difference between restoring
"Database" and "Files or Filegroups"? When you right-click on a database an
d
you choose Tasks...Restore, you have a choice between "Database" and "Files
or Filegroups". What's the difference?
Choosing "Database" seems to work better, if I am restoring a backup of one
database into another database. But, I think if I'm restoring a backup of a
database into the same database, I usually choose "Files or Filegroups".
childofthe1980sMy understanding you want to use FileGroup/File backup if you need to do
separate backups on the files in the database.
