Restoring SQL 6.5 DBs

Hi
I am trying to restore several databases to a single server due to restricti
ons on hardware. Each server had previously had a database that was named ex
actly the same on each server. Therefore, the new instances will be appended
with an appropriate suffix
to distinguish it from the already existing database on the server.
The problem is actually trying to restore the first database. I have created
a new database and named it accordingly. I have a backup of the database I
want to restore to this server. When I try and restore it by entering the pa
th of the .dat file, the 'r
estore now' option is not highlighted.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction.
Many thanks
KalpeshHi Kalpesh,
Not sure what happend with Enterprise manager. The "Restore Now" button will
be enabled only after you
select the destination database , "Add file" button , and select the
correct backup file to restore and click "close".
(Now the Restore Now button will be enabled)...

Why dont you try executing the below command to restore the database from
ISQL_W .
LOAD Database <dbname> from disk='C:\backup\dbname.DMP' with stats=10
(Do the same step for all the databases)
Note:
1. Change the file name and directory based on your requirement.
2. Ensure that SQL 6.5 is patched with SP5a + SP5a Post update
Thanks

Restoring master database

Hi All
Im testing our disaster recovery plan by rebuilding our production server
onto a new server box with different hardware and partitions.
Ive started the SQL server in single user mode and restored the master
database to a success message but when it tries to restart it fails to start.
On checking the error log there are some VDN errors, I assume that this is
because the server Im restoring it to has different drive setup to the live
server.
Is there anyway around this problem?

Yes it fails to start even with the -f flag
I've tried changing the startup parameters but because the SQL server isn't
starting I can not get into the properties through Enterprise Manager.
Im not sure how Attach/Detach can help me as Im trying to restore from
backup?
The common error Im getting is when the SQL server is trying to start it is
looking for the other system databases from a drive that doesnt exist
producing VDN errors

Test this out by calling sqlservr from a command prompt, see "sqlservr
Application" in Books online for parameters. Also check out the trace flag
3608 which will skip recovery on all databases except master, you can then
detach each database and re-attach with the new files as descibed for msdb
and model in
http://support.microsoft.com/default...22120121120120
To move tempdb use the alter database command as described.

Restoring databases

This weekend I have to restore a backup from one SQL server 2000 machine to
another. I am doing this simply because we are updating the hardware, so
when the new machine has been built it will have the same network name as
the original box. The current box is running Windows 2000 Server with SQL
2000 sp2, the new box will be Windows 2003 and SQL 2000 sp3a. There are 8
small databases totaling 1.5Gb. My question is do I need to restore any of
the SQL databases? msdb? pubs? I normally do this for SAP databases where I
only have to restore the SAP database and nothing else. Can anbody enlighten
me?
GavYou don't actually need to restore any of you system
databases unless you have modified or added code in them
(which is a bit dangeous anyway).
In your text you said the pubs database, thats not a
system database but a user database, the answer is it
depends if you have changed it.
BTW the best way of doing it is not to restore them, but
to detach the database and copy over the log and data file
onto the new server then re-attach them. It will save you
a bit of time ;)

What about any users that are defined in Logins? Where are they stored?
Thought about detaching the databases but they are on local storage and both
machines have the same name so without changing server names we cannot have
them both on the network at the same time. Restore takes no time at all so
its probably less hassle.
Just read up on the other databases, doh, didn't realise pub was just a
sample like northwind. :o)
